The problem with the screen freezing was something very annoying for me. It turns out that the driver on motherboard is messing up with the nVidia driver. I don’t think that the visuals make ubuntu more efiicient or cooler, so I turned them off. The good news is that this problem will be fixed in ubuntu 10.4
